The U.S. prides itself on world-class healthcare. And few of us would argue that Alabama is a traditional state where family values run deep. So why are we losing two to four times as many new moms and babies as families Canada, the UK, Japan, or two dozen other developed countries?
On October 26, 2017, Forward Alabama partnered with Make a Difference (MAD) in Alabama, Greater Birmingham Democrats, Birthwell Partners, Women’s March Alabama, and Alabama New South Alliance to host the panel Unnecessary Deaths: Why We Lose Alabama Infants and Mothers.
The panel featured MARK E WILSON, MD, Health Officer, Jefferson County Department of Health; JANET M BRONSTEIN, MA, PhD, Professor in the Department of Health Care Organization and Policy and Senior Scholar, Lister Hill Center for Health Policy, University of Alabama at Birmingham, is the author of 'Preterm Birth in the United States: A Sociocultural Approach; JESANNA COOPER, MD, the Chair of the Women and Infants' Division at Princeton Baptist Medical Center ND
Bottom Line: As many as half of these deaths – infants and moms – are preventable, experts say. Use our Printable Postcards & Solutions Scripts to contact the Governor and your Alabama legislators and become part of the solution to saving these young lives.
We are moving into an action phase with state professionals and legislators to push for solutions in this critical area of women’s health. We will be collaborating with other activist and women’s organizations throughout the state on this make-Alabama-family-friendly campaign all this year.
